BUSY DUO HEAD FOR THE SUNSHINE OF AUSTRALIA

Josh Loughrey (Wrag Barn, pictured right) and Jordan Smith (Bowood G&CC), both members of Wiltshire’s 2011 County Championship-winning team, face a busy schedule over the next few months as they prepare for the 2012 British and European season.

Both have already played for England at the Costa Ballena Quadrangular tournament in Spain last week, at the conclusion of which they headed off to Australia under England Golf’s annual arrangement with the Waverley Golf Club of Melbourne.

They will guest for the club’s team in the Victoria Golf Association’s Pennant Series of events, which begins on 18th March and runs until May, as well as competing in the major Australian amateur championships prior to that.

Loughrey, 21 (picture © Tom Ward), enjoyed a number of high finishes last year including equal third in the Darwin Salver, fourth in the Duncan Putter and tied fifth in the Berkshire Trophy. The latter performance helped him win the Scrutton Jug for the best aggregate from the Berkshire and Brabazon Trophies. He was also tied fourth in the Chiberta Grand Prix and equal sixth in the Biarritz Cup when representing the EGU.

Smith, 19, an AASE graduate of Filton College, has developed through their golfing programme. He has been the Intercollegiate Tour Players champion for the past two years and is an England Schools international. Apart from being a member of the County Championship-winning Wiltshire team at Ganton last year, he also finished fourth in the Faldo Series Grand Final at Lough Erne.

The link-up with the Waverley club, which has run for several years, will see Loughrey and Smith staying with club members. Two years ago, Todd Adcock from Sussex helped Waverley win the Pennant while Lincolnshire’s David Coupland was in the team that finished runners-up last year.

The Pennant Series is a club team competition which commenced in 1899 between five clubs. This year, 46 clubs will be involved divided into six divisions with promotion and relegation operating at the end of the series.

Matches are played each week at a different venue on a round robin basis in each division with each club represented by a seven man team.

FIESTA TIME AT WRAG BARN

On 22 May 2012 a little piece of Spain will come to Wrag Barn Golf and Country Club as the 2012 Club Captain Steve Griffiths and the Ladies’ Captain Juliet Platt will be hosting the Swindon Golf Challenge and Spanish Experience in aid of research into brain cancer.

Steve and Juliet decided to join forces to raise money for the Seve Ballesteros Foundation working in partnership with Cancer Research UK to beat brain cancer after the golfing superstar passed away last May.

“Seve was such an inspiration on the golf course and in life and I’m really pleased to be raising money for this cause through my captaincy,” said Steve.

To add some extra special Seve style, and the ¡olé! factor, the day will be a true Spanish golf experience with the opportunity to sample Spanish beer, wine, sherry, tapas and paella both on the course and off, with authentic Flamenco music and dancing for entertainment before the prize-giving.

The format for the day will be a Better Ball stableford pairs competition and throughout there will be the chance to win in putting, chipping and “beat the pro” competitions.

Wrag Barn General Manager, Tracey Lee, said "I attended a Spanish golf experience in November, and I have to say it was one of the best golfing days out I’d ever had. It seemed a perfect fit to combine this with the Captains’ fund-raising for the Seve charity."

"This is a great opportunity for business teams to get together for an unusual company celebration, a team-building or incentivised event, so do book early to avoid disappointment. There will also be opportunities for networking and sponsoring holes to get your business known," said Steve.
