The aim of National Apprenticeship Week is to bring together employers, training providers and learners to celebrate apprenticeships and skills. With the cost of university education mounting and interest rates on student loans making eventual repayment increasingly difficult, the opportunity provided by apprenticeships feels more relevant than ever.
There are some naysayers who say apprenticeships are just cheap labour. However, they can also provide real opportunities. Our apprentice, Kiel, arrived into a complicated world but brought with him a sunny, enthusiastic personality, a willingness to work hard and the habit of always arriving on time. He started at Wrag Barn as an apprentice chef in 2022 and embarked on a training programme with regular day release to attend Swindon College. I have never been greeted by a downcast Kiel and his bicycle was always at Wrag Barn long before I arrived in the morning.
Thanks to guidance from our Head Chef Simon and other members of our Food and Beverage team, Kiel has acquired the skills to cook delicious food for parties and celebrations. He is unfazed by the challenge of providing food under time pressure for golfers heading to the first tee but needing immediate sustenance. We’re proud of everything he has achieved and will miss him when he starts work in a business listed 20th in the EstrellaDamm Top 50 Gastropubs.
While learning to cook, Kiel has also learned to play golf and we look forward to seeing his smiling face when he returns to lower his handicap!
