Wrag Barn Men’s Championsips sponsored by Toyota Fishbrothers

After weeks of dry weather and recent intensive rainstorms, the task of presenting the course for the Men’s Champs wasn’t without its challenges.

The second May Bank holiday weekend is the traditional date for the event as it gives everyone a chance to recover before work on Tuesday. The smart money was on Guy Drayton to win the trophy as he shot 5 under his handicap only a few weeks previously to beat the course record off the yellow tees. However, the overnight leader was Lee Parker on 74 who’s coach Tom Watson was thrilled to see the results of hard-working grit and determination. Lee’s second round of 87 knocked him off the top spot but was good enough to earn him third place in the best nett score.

Sunday was a different day, and the order of merit took a bit of a dance with Guy shooting gross 72 and a total score of 147 which put him 8 shots ahead of Ben Paines on 155. Lee was awarded 3rd nett and didn’t receive a prize for his initial success as only one prize is awarded to each person.

Next year’s Club Captain Andy Bright won the nett prize on nett 143 with Guy in second place, but the prize went to Roger Hunt on 145.

Never underestimate the achievements of these golfers, the wind was brutal and some of the pin positions were very tricky.

Thank you to the team who ran the competition, the clubhouse staff who kept everyone fed and watered and listened to the tales of could’ve, should’ve, would’ve and last but not least the greens staff who worked really hard to present the course so well for the competition.
